Cancer emerged from the British death metal underground in the early 1990s with Death Shall Rise, their 1991 debut for Peaceville Records. The band carved out territory between the grinding brutality of early Carcass and the structured death metal vocabulary being codified across the Atlantic, establishing themselves as distinctive voices within the UK's nascent extreme metal scene. Death Shall Rise remains their most direct statement—a record that prioritizes visceral songwriting and instrumental clarity over pure extremity.

Tracks like "Hung, Drawn And Quartered" and "Tasteless Incest" establish Cancer's approach: death metal anchored by grooved, mid-tempo sections that allow each instrument to breathe.
