Burzum's self-titled debut arrived in 1992 as a seismic shock to the nascent Norwegian black metal scene. Recorded during mid-winter at Grieghallen, the album established Ulver's Kristoffer Hahn as a singular voice—synthesizing raw lo-fi black metal with introspective dark ambient passages and electronic textures. Where contemporaries leaned into pure velocity, Burzum introduced compositional depth and atmospheric restraint, positioning itself as both a landmark of first-wave Norwegian black metal and a proving ground for the ambient experiments that would define the project's later iterations.

The record's nine tracks form a cohesive descent into desolation. "Feeble Screams From Forests Unknown" sets the template with tremolo-picked riffs and anguished vocals buried in the mix, while "Ea" strips away the metal entirely, letting synth drones and field recordings dominate. "Lord Of The Deeps" and "Black Spell Of Destruction" hammer at the listener with tighter songwriting and clearer production, whereas "Channelling The Power Of Souls Into A New God" channels orchestral darkness through a lo-fi filter. "War" and "The Crying Orc" bracket stretches of pure ambient texture that suggest landscape and isolation over conventional song structure. The album's refusal to choose between visceral aggression and meditative quietude remains its greatest strength.

This 2022 reissue restores the debut to vinyl with meticulous attention to the original artwork and packaging, capturing the album's murky aesthetic while rendering it tangible in physical form. The pressing includes a white paper inner sleeve and comes housed in carefully reproduced sleeve art, allowing newcomers and collectors alike to experience Burzum as the artist intended—a record that demands repeated listening in focused, uninterrupted sessions.
