The album's infamy preceded its release—shaped by the band's turbulent history and the circumstances surrounding its creation—but the music itself vindicated the mythology. It remains the definitive statement of second-wave black metal's raw aggression and anti-production ethos, a record that rejected the polished excess of its contemporaries in favor of corrosive, lo-fi intensity.

Opening with the gaunt church bells and tremolo assault of "Funeral Fog," the record establishes an atmosphere of genuine hostility. "Freezing Moon" crystallizes the album's appeal: a patient, measured march into darkness where Attila Csihar's anguished vocals cut through walls of distorted guitars. The mid-album run of "Cursed in Eternity" and "Pagan Fears" sustains this oppressive momentum, while "Life Eternal" offers the closest thing to a structural anchor—a song that builds ritual weight through repetition rather than conventional progression. The closer "From the Dark Past" leaves listeners in scorched earth, no redemption offered.
